Researchers from IKBFU Discover How to Slow Down Brain Ageing
According to the researchers of the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University and their colleagues from University of Warwick, an active lifestyle and moderation in calorie intake can slow down the brain ageing. This conclusion is based on the studies of synapses and neurons in the cerebral cortex.

The main goal of our study was to find out how ageing influences the human brain. That is why we focused on neurons, synapses and glial cells mainly through the research.
It is a well-known fact that an ordinary human brain has approximately 90 billion neurons, which are bonded by synaptic connections. A neuron is a granular cell that is the fundamental functional unit of nervous tissue transmitting and receiving nerve impulses. And a synapse is a small gap at the end of a neuron that allows a signal to pass from one neuron to another. Synapses are found where nerve cells connect with other nerve cells.
The researchers discovered that a healthy lifestyle and moderation in calorie intake can slow down the brain ageing concerning the stimulation of glial cells. The next step is to create a pharmacological method for the reduction of brain ageing.
It is also noteworthy that all the studies were conducted at University of Warwick, Great Britain. Yury Pankratov and Juliana Lalo led the research group. The results of the studies were published in authoritative scientific journal Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience.
