A delegation from Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (IKBFU) paid a working visit to the Ocean University of China (OUC). The trip was aimed at exchanging scientific experience, discussing current research in the life sciences, and identifying new areas for mutual projects.
The key event of the visit was a lecture by Yulia Kulikova, Senior Researcher at the IKBFU Laboratory of Microbiology and Biotechnology. She addressed students and staff of the OUC Institute of Marine Life Sciences with a presentation entitled “Biofuel from biowaste: technologies and challenges”. The expert highlighted the latest achievements of the IKBFU laboratory in the processing of organic waste and the prospects for developing sustainable energy sources.
From the Chinese side, the Vice Dean of the OUC Institute of Marine Life Sciences gave a detailed overview of the large-scale research projects being carried out at the institute. These include the development of new materials based on collagen and feed proteins, the study of viral and microbial communities in China’s coastal seas and pelagic environments, research into the diversity of marine viruses, and the creation of a comprehensive database of “omics” information and interactions between marine viruses and “red tides” (harmful algal blooms).
As part of the visit, the IKBFU delegation toured the advanced laboratories of the Ocean University of China, where they became familiar with unique equipment and discussed experimental methodologies with their Chinese colleagues.
The visit to the Ocean University of China proved to be extremely productive. We not only presented our developments in the field of biotechnology, but also witnessed the impressive scale of research conducted by our Chinese partners. Of particular interest are their projects on the production of pharmaceuticals and functional products using marine resources. This opens up broad prospects for joint research and publications,
noted Yulia Kulikova.
The meetings and negotiations held laid a solid foundation for the further development of academic and educational cooperation between IKBFU and the Ocean University of China. Both sides expressed mutual interest in implementing joint programs and projects in the near future,
summarized Maria Litvinyuk, Head of the Center for Intercultural Communication with the Asia-Pacific Region.
