IKBFU Expert: Birds Die not from Cold, but from Hunger

Kaliningrad winter this year decided to remind of itself seriously: a few weeks the thermometer column is below 10°C, the region covered with snow and biting cold. For humans it is a rare test of weather, and for birds — real stress: the feathered, accustomed to the mild and almost snow-free winters of recent years, were not prepared for such harsh conditions where every day becomes a struggle for heat and food. Support of birds in the current frosty winter is necessary, says IKBFU’s expert, a biologist and ornithologist Yulia Grishanova.

First of all, the help is needed by those species that, due to previous warm mild winters, preferred to stay for winter in the territory of the Kaliningrad region: redstarts, robins, wrens. As a feeding you can try to offer a mix (finely grated carrot with a minced egg).

Always remember that birds do not die from cold, but from hunger. Supporting feeding can be organized by each directly in your yard or nearby garden area — for most birds suitable sunflower seed (fresh, unsalted, not fried), fresh lard, berries, chopped apples — all of those is well eaten by thrushes, waxwings and finches. It is good to feed with chopped nuts,
says Yulia Grishanova.

The bird feeder needs to be cleaned and constantly updated, because fed birds will wait for you. It is necessary to place the feeders in the bushes to limit the number of predators.

"It is good to feed waterfowl with oat flakes, grain, compound fodder, chopped vegetables on the shore — says the expert. — Feeding wild mammals should be careful — with squirrels it is clear that they feed where the birds do. Be careful, any contact (bite, scratch) — be sure to consult a doctor for anti-rabies therapy. If you see a creature in need of help, then you can contact the “Baltic Biosphere” and the “Busido” Club. However, we must remember that these organizations always need financial support (feed, veterinary services — everything now depends on significant amounts)."
