On December 27th, the IKBFU Medical Simulation Centre hosted the II Winter Quest in Surgery and Emergency Care. Six teams comprising 3–6 year students of the “General Medicine” educational programme took part in the event. Notably, one team included both Russian and international students, and two teams consisted entirely of 4–6 year international students.

The student's performance was evaluated based on several criteria including precision, timing, and algorithm compliance. “FAST Protocol in Emergency Surgery”, considered to be the most appropriate for the diagnosis of life-threatening conditions, was included in the Quest for the first time. Using an ultrasound machine, the students demonstrated a patient examination algorithm aimed at detecting haemorrhage and organ damage. “Simulated Patient” contest, in which students of the Surgical Scientific Society themselves played the role of patients, was also held for the first time. For the MedBox Quiz the students developed theoretical questions on anatomy, general and abdominal surgery, traumatology-orthopaedics, neurosurgery. All participants have demonstrated excellent practical skills, teamwork, and an outstanding level of academic knowledge. |
The jury consisted of Associate Professors of the Department of Surgical Disciplines of the Institute of Medicine and Life Sciences, a general practitioner of City Hospital No. 4 and Scientific Society Students.
All contests were designed to be as realistic as possible. For instance, in “Post-Operative Wound Management” the participants closely followed hand hygiene guidelines, wore sterile gloves and gowns, and displayed knowledge of the dressing algorithm for various wounds in sterile conditions. In “FAST Protocol in Emergency Surgery” students used ultrasound equipment, and explained the order of their actions.
All contestants showed commitment to surgical disciplines, as well as a high level of theoretical and practical training.
3rd year students Leonid Begma, Galina Volosova, Nurmukhammad Abduragimov took first place.
4th year students Anna Shvabauer, Irina Larina, Alina Koppel, Ekaterina Babich took second place.
Ekaterina Usova, 5th year students Nikita Maltsev and Shraddha Bhikaji Gawade took third place.
“Surgical Sutures” and “FAST protocol in emergency surgery” contests were awarded additionally as the most difficult. 3rd year students Leonid Begma, Galina Volosova, Nurmuhammad Abdurahimov prevailed in “Surgical Sutures”, 4th year students Anna Shvabauer, Irina Larina, Alina Koppel, Ekaterina Babich won “FAST Protocol in Emergency Surgery”. Students Esha Kumavat, Harshada Swamy, Shradha Narode, Vibhavi Gaikwad showed a high level of academic knowledge. Students Aditi Mahadev, Asavari Omprakash, Chinmay Janardhan Wankhede, Shruti Rupesh Pawar took first place in “Post-Operative Wound Management”.
