The plenary session “The world concept of philosophy in modern conditions: in search of a new future”, moderated by the Rector of the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University Alexander Fedorov, took place on the first day of the International Kant Congress.
Among the guest speakers were Abdusalam Huseynov, Alexei Kozyrev, Felix Azhimov and Roman Svetlov. In his opening speech, IKBFU Rector Alexander Fedorov remarked that the meeting “brought together important philosophical leaders of Russia”.
The participants discussed the importance of philosophy as a science and its future, particularly in the context of the development of artificial intelligence. The Rector believes that despite Ilon Musk’s statements that artificial intelligence might become smarter than humans as early as the next year, “philosophy will remain the very last thing that artificial intelligence cannot produce. Hence, this defines its future.”
Alexei Kozyrev, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at Lomonosov Moscow State University, pointed out that the goal of philosophers in the modern world is “to define a new concept of scientific philosophy, to rethink what ’scientificity’ in philosophy is”. The speaker also emphasised the increased demand for philosophy in society among people of different professions and its “important societal pragmatic status”.
All participants of the session stressed the undeniable importance of Immanuel Kant’s teachings in the modern world. For instance, Abdusalam Huseynov, Acting Director of the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, labelled Kant’s ideas as “cosmic” and emphasised their relevance for our future since they “encompass the notions of the universe.”. Alexei Kozyrev remarked that Kant’s doctrine of antinomies is now “the basis of technology for developing artificial intelligence”.
