The catalpa's foliage is lush, the leaves are heart-shaped and can measure up to 20 centimetres in length. The name Catalpa is a reminder of its origins. It was originally Catawba, a name still held by an Indian tribe in the southeastern United States. A river in North Carolina bears the same name. The tree has a strong scent that can be perceived when rubbing its leaves. The leaves are mildly poisonous, making the cigar tree a natural mosquitocide. The bell-shaped flowers are brilliant white with yellow stripes and purple spots in June and July. As soon as bloom ends, tube-shaped seed pods up to 40 centimetres long begin to ripen. These long pods can hang on the trees all winter. |
Visit the Botanical Garden and see the flowering plants any day of the week from 10 a. m. to 7 p. m. at 12 Lesnaya Street, Kaliningrad.
