The fourth annual "Online Intensive Course in Russian" — organised by Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University — commenced on 24 August and will continue until 30 August.
The online intensive brings together people from around the world — for whom the Russian language serves as a bridge to communication, professional growth, and cultural discovery. Over the course of the week, participants will study with IKBFU's Russian language teachers, sharpen their language skills, and explore modern Russia through literature, art, music, everyday culture, and new technologies.
Maxim Demin, IKBFU Rector:
This online intensive has traditionally brought together everyone who appreciates the Russian language — from those taking their first steps in mastering this complex yet beautiful language to experienced specialists for whom Russian has become both a profession and a calling. I am confident that this intensive will be, in every sense, a virtual journey for you into the the many layers of Russian life and culture.
The 2026 programme is tailored to participants' proficiency in Russian, with classes organised into three levels — elementary, intermediate, and advanced. Morning and evening sessions are available to accommodate different time zones.
ach level offers a distinct immersion experience. Beginners start with the alphabet and first dialogues, moving on to conversations about friendship, home, holidays, and music. Intermediate learners explore Russian daily life and culture, debate the formula for the perfect weekend, discover traditions, and even design games with artificial intelligence. Advanced participants tackle topical themes — from space exploration and theatre to contemporary slang, fairy tales, and the cultural code embedded in Russian music and everyday life.
Over the past four years, the Online Intensive has grown into one of IKBFU's largest international projects for promoting the Russian language. The first intensive in 2023 attracted over 1,600 participants from 72 countries. By 2025, more than 4,000 learners from 106 countries had joined. This year, the intensive has set a new record — with participants from 118 countries registered to take part.
Tatyana Tsvigun, Advisor to the Rectorate for Russian Language and Development of Humanitarian Education:
Every year, we are delighted to see familiar names on the participant list — for these people, the intensive has become a tradition, an annual return to the Russian language. However, the majority of participants — nearly 15,000 over the past four years — are discovering both the Russian language and our university for the very first time. It is precisely for the sake of these first steps that we organise this intensive.
