IKBFU employees found a forever home for a lost and emaciated Akita Inu dog. The frightened animal was spotted hiding in an excavator bucket at a construction site. It was located by the IKBFU Acting Rector, Maxim Demin, and taken to the University’s Botanical Garden.

For several days, my family and I tried to earn the dog’s trust. By the third day, it approached us, and we were finally able to bring it to a better place. The wonderful staff at our Botanical Garden took her in, gave her food, a bath, and lots of love. She’s now a new dog! I’m happy that she has already settled into her new life and loves the staff as much as they love her. |
The dog chose Svetlana Yakovleva, head of the IKBFU Botanical Garden Laboratory, as her owner.

She was very scared, especially of cars — trucks or minivans. Maybe she was chased or thrown out of a vehicle. Now she’s becoming calmer and calmer by the day. She is very young, practically a puppy! |
The Botanical Garden staff took the Akita in, treated her for ticks and worms, and gave her a name.
Svetlana Yakovleva, head of the IKBFU Botanical Garden Laboratory: |
We call her Kissa because she answers to “kis-kis” (“kitty-kitty”) as if she’s used to being around cats. When Kissa first arrived, she was so thin that you could feel all her bones through her fur. Despite her large and fluffy appearance, she weighs just 25kg. We’re working on fattening her up. Kissa is incredibly sweet, curious, and athletic — she can easily jump a fence nearly two metres high. For now, she’s living in our office, walking on a leash, getting used to her new surroundings, and learning to recognize strangers from friends. She’s a very affectionate, lively, and inquisitive dog. |
Kissa loves walking along the paths in the Botanical Garden and is starting to show her hunting instincts.
Svetlana Yakovleva, head of the IKBFU Botanical Garden Laboratory: |
Kissa is quite the hunter and loves chasing mice. While we don’t encourage it for her safety, we let her try as a game. She’s been to the vet and is being treated for fleas and ticks. She doesn’t have a chip, so it’s impossible to know where she came from. The Garden staff is currently working on building her a large, comfortable pen. |
Visit the Botanical Garden, meet Kissa and see the amazing plants any day of the week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 12 Lesnaya Street, Kaliningrad.
