A team from the IKBFU Higher School of Living Systems contributed to the art exhibition "Living Topologies / Inhuman Agents" at the Baltic branch of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.
One of the exhibition pieces demonstrates the layout of a St. Petersburg district out of Escherichia coli bacteria. Polina Kornilova, a third-year student of the Bioengineering and Bioinformatics educational programme, cultivated the microorganisms under the scientific supervision of Valery Lisun, laboratory assistant.

It's common practice to involve microbiologists in the art process. In this way, observers are introduced to a rich world that can only be seen under a microscope. This popularises science and microbiology specifically. We thank Polina Kornilova for her diligence and hard work. |
The author of the sculpture is Sofia Romanova.
Visitors are able to observe how microorganisms transform the plan of a district. By the end of the exhibition, the bacteria will completely change the clear grid of St. Petersburg streets, replacing it with the contours of a living landscape, albeit a miniature one. |
