The new campus, which is currently under construction on Alexander Nevsky St., will combine historical and modern architecture. Currently work is being done on the new university buildings, congress centre, and dormitories, with an additional large park being planned. Once completed, this “city within a city” will be open to the public.
Arthur Sarnitz, the designer of the world-class campus concept and a renowned Kaliningrad architect, explained why the new campus will make the Kantiana's appearance one of the most recognisable among Russian universities and become a striking landmark.
— How was the “Neocampus” concept conceived?
— Just before the university administration approached me to develop the concept, I had the opportunity to take part in an extensive international business trip focused on exploring educational institution campuses. During this trip, I visited various European universities in Austria, Germany, and the UK, as well as newly established ones in South Korea. I also had the chance to learn about the unique practices of educational institutions in Japan and China, and explore the renowned campuses in the United States. The trip completely changed my perspective and set a new benchmark for me.
During my time as a student in Warsaw, I came to understand the significance of incorporating historical influence into a university's image. I wanted the design to showcase the rich and extensive history of both the city and the University.
Kaliningrad stands out among other Russian cities due to its unique blend of architectural styles from various time periods, including the Soviet era. This attracts prospective students from different regions. They not only seek quality education but also desire to live in an exciting place. The upcoming campus will offer precisely this kind of exceptional environment, providing the space for study, research, living, and recreation.
— How did the idea of creating a “city within a city” come about?
— The importance of IKBFU to the city today is comparable to Albertina’s significance to Königsberg during its prime.
The new campus should make a strong impression and seamlessly blend various historical architectural styles, thus symbolising the passage of time and the continuing historical tradition.
— The renowned MSU high-rise is probably the most remarkable architectural landmark among Russian universities. Will the “neocampus” match its appeal?
— IKBFU's forthcoming symbol will be the clock tower of the Higher School of Philosophy, History and Social Sciences building, which is planned to house one of the finest libraries in the country.
The entire campus will centre around it, with all streets converging at the future Immanuel Kant Square.
— The concept also calls for a large park. What are the plans for it?
— It should be noted that the construction of the campus will be finished in approximately 18 months, while the development of the park will occur at a later stage.
The park will span a minimum of 4 hectares and will feature oak groves, hornbeam alleys, and grassy lawns. We have numerous ideas for it, such as establishing a tradition of hosting philosophy classes in the park, allowing students and educators to contemplate the meaning of life amidst the picturesque landscape.
