More than thirty leading experts from Russia, Belarus, Germany and Norway attended the International Forum “Baltic Marine Heritage: Future and Risks”. The event, organised by IKBFU, took place on the 14th—15th of December across the university’s campus and the World Ocean Museum.
Participants exchanged valuable insights on international cooperation efforts in the region, sharing their expertise and identifying opportunities for further collaboration. A central theme of the forum was the pressing issue of climate neutrality in the Baltic Sea Region. The panel established new areas of marine research and paved the way for collaborative conservation efforts.
The Forum was a part of the international “Baltic Platform” project. The organising committee has drafted a resolution based on the expert reports.

December 14-15, 2023, Kaliningrad, Russia The maritime heritage of the Baltic Sea is shared heritage of the peoples of all its coastal countries. Thus, preservation of Baltic environment, neutralization of harmful anthropogenic factors and interaction of inhabitants are seen as a key task calling countries of the region for a joint action. More than that, both international cooperation in the field of marine heritage research and international cooperation programs on the Baltic Sea shape lifestyles and values of the peoples and states. Thus, any attempts to politicize scientific expert community and isolate individual participants decrease the effect of solving Baltic Sea problems and do harm to all Baltic states. The conference participants emphasize that:
The most effective form of coordinating the interests of the countries and residents of the Baltic area is considered to be cross-border and trans-border cooperation. The existing experience has been demonstrated in the reports of most experts. Not only coastal countries, but also countries located in Central, Eastern and Northern Europe play an increasingly important part in preservation of Baltic Sea heritage and achieving of climate neutrality. It holds true also for the ones located outside the region as they use Baltic transport resources, energy and other Baltic assets for their development. Based on the discussions, Forum's participants have elaborated on the following measures to expand international cooperation and preserve the Baltic Sea heritage:
